Following his debut at Hallam for the FA Representative XI that played the Sheffield based club as part of their 150th anniversary celebrations back in October 2010, leading scorer James Walshaw has been included in the England C squad for the International Challenge Trophy Semi-Final versus Belgium at Luton Town on Wednesday 09 February 2011.
Walshaw, who scored the opener in a 6-1 win at Hallam, is part of a 16 man squad and is the only player – together with with Liam Brownhill of Droylsden – to be chosen from a club outside of the Blue Square Premier.
England C Manager Paul Fairclough’s expects a tough game against a skillful Belgian side “Belgium are a very technical side, they will play good football, there won’t be any long ball tactics and they encourage all their players to pass the ball,” said Fairclough. “I went to see them against Italy and they have a lot of capable players, so the standard will be high.”
Fairclough is delighted to see players from the Conference and below, gaining international experience and added: “It’s great for our players who play non-League football as it gives them experience of a high technical game. It also exposes them to different styles which they can take back to their clubs.”
England also have the incentive of home advantage, should they make it past the Belgians, against the winners of the other semi between Italy and Portugal.
Kick off at Kenilworth Road is 7:30pm. Admission will be £5 for adults and £1 for concessions. For more information call Luton Town’s ticket office on 01582 416976.
