A much changed Guiseley side had to work hard to dispatch their opposition in the West Riding County Cup, but Will Longbottom’s first goal from open play in over a year, two tremendous finishes from Cam Wilson, and a goal made by academy cameos Ibby Origbaajo and Dan Brookes saw the Lions ease into the next round, writes Dave Robertson.
Guiseley were on top for most of the game but for the first hour, Steeton proved capable and obdurate opponents. The Lions played some neat passing football to create chances, and early opportunities for Longbottom and a returning Kyle White went begging.
Persistance paid off however when the hosts surrendered possession on the edge of their own box, White pounced and fed Longbottom, breaking the offside trap to fire past the Steeton keeper Brad Emmerson. The hosts rallied, and ten minutes later forced Michael Roxburgh into his first and only save of the game, a rasping shot by Kevin Gonzalez from a tight angle, parried over the bar by the debutant keeper.
Guiseley continued to press and might have doubled their advantage before the break when Jordan Thewlis barreled through midfield to the edge of the area, to find Jack Emmett in space, who could only shoot narrowly wide. The Chevvies had done well to frustrate Ian Richards’ men and restrict them to a single goal.
Wilson and Charlie Staniland were brought on for Longbottom and Emmett at half time, and wore down the tiring NWCFL side.
Wilson scored a goal not dissimilar to his Cleethorpes effort to double the advantage, shooting through a crowd into the corner of the net, before earning space in the box to curl a shot around the Steeton keeper for his second and Guiseley’s third.
Minutes later, Wilson might well have had a hat trick but for his shot striking the outstretched leg of the keeper – the ball looping into the air and but for a last ditch Alfie Dowden header would’ve dropped under the bar and in.
Academy players Will Buttle, Origbaajo, and Brookes were introduced to torment the hosts more and the latter two combined for the fourth. A beautifully chipped through ball by Origbaajo was controlled and volleyed toward goal by Brookes, and crashed off both posts before crossing the line, to put the game to bed.
After the game, Richards praised the teams professionalism and control of the game.
Guiseley go on to face Club Thorne Colliery in the second round, and now turn to preparation for the trip to top of the table Redcar on Saturday.
