For the second consecutive game Guiseley AFC Vixens staged a stirring comeback in the last few minutes to turn a probable defeat into an extremely important victory.
On a 3G pitch Guiseley started well and dominated possession in the first 20 minutes but a combination of good goalkeeping and errant finishing meant that the nearest Guiseley came to opening the scoring was a 25 yard thunderbolt from Kerrie Zserdicky which hit the angle of post and crossbar.
As the game progressed Morecambe began to grow in confidence and their fast forwards started to trouble the Guiseley defence.
Shortly before half-time Morecambe took the lead in somewhat contentious manner when a quickly taken free kick was tipped onto the bar by goalkeeper Danni Maslin who then produced heroics to save the follow-up shot but was aghast to see the assistant referee signalling that the ball had crossed the goal-line.
Shortly after half-time Guiseley threw caution to the wind with a more attacking formation and were rewarded with 15 minutes remaining when a cross from fullback Kerrie Zserdicky was headed into the goal by fellow fullback Lou Hunt.
Any thought that this goal would suppress Morecambe’s confidence were quickly discarded when Danni Maslin could only push out a shot into the path of a Morecambe striker who finished to give Morecambe a 2-1 lead with 10 minutes remaining.
Guiseley bombarded the Morecambe goal and with 7 minutes left a cross from the right found Kerrie Zserdicky 15 yards from goal and her crisp right foot strike gave the Morecambe keeper little chance and levelled the scores.
As in the previous game Guiseley were now in no mood to settle for a point and in the 90th minute Tanya Rich was foiled by a good save but the ball ran to Becky Kendell who expertly fired between 2 defenders on the goal-line to score the winning goal. (featured picture)
In truth this was a game which could have gone either way but it is testament to Guiseley’s spirit that they again snatched victory from the jaws of defeat.
The victory was the result of a team ethic but special mention must be made of Katie Welham and Aimi Beresford who maintained prodigious work-rates and good standards throughout the entire game.
