Guiseley Vixens travel to Fylde Ladies for the second time this season. This time for the FA Women’s Cup Second Round.
Manager Glen Preston gave his thoughts ahead of the visit.
Glen, you went to Fylde earlier in the season and you go there again, this time for the FA Cup. How serious are you taking the FA Cup this year and how welcome of a break is it away from the league?
“This is the biggest cup competition in the women’s game. It has prestige, financial incentives, the chance to be an underdog who achieves above expectation and the potential to land an historic draw against a giant if you can get through just one or two games.
“You have to be in love with this competition and take it seriously and we will be doing all we can to get a result this Sunday.”
If you win this weekend it will be the farthest the Vixens will have gone in the competition but it’s not going to be easy going up against Fylde who you know a lot about, having already played them in the league this season.
“We won a fair few games in the competition last year and got to the second round so for us to get to try and get to the third round for the first time in the clubs history would be fantastic.
“We know away to Fylde we go in as underdogs so it won’t be easy although I wouldn’t say we are overwhelming underdogs. We saw a side earlier in the year we felt we matched for the vast majority of the game and on our best day could maybe beat so it’s not out of the question for us to cause an upset and that’s what we will be setting out to do.”
How is the squad looking going into this with the players out through one means or another?
“We will be without a couple of key players so that’s frustrating but at the same time we will be able to welcome new players such as Panagiota who’s a Greek U20 international, Maria Ledezma who has played at a high level in Belgium and Marti Floyd to the squad who will help give us different options, so we are not at full strength, but we have plenty of quality players available.”
