Vixens back in style

After a 6 week gap in fixtures due to the Christmas break and weather postponements Guiseley AFC Vixens returned in style with them 9-1 victory at Sheffield United Community being their best league win of the season. Guiseley had new signings Mel Sherwood and Emma White making their debuts in this fixture whilst Charlie Blythe returned on the bench following a long injury lay-off.

The hard work done in training over this period was clearly evident and Guiseley took control of the game from the start and were rewarded with a headed goal from Emily Maguire following a Tanya Rich corner in the 10th minute.

Sheffield United were simply unable to deal with Guiseley’s high tempo passing game and in the 15th minute a 6 player passing move which covered almost all of the pitch culminated in a drilled shot by Kerrie Zserdicky into the corner of the goal.

Shortly thereafter Tanya Rich beat the Sheffield United goalkeeper to a through ball to score into an unguarded goal and the scoring for the first half was completed when the Sheffield United fullback, under extreme pressure from Lou Hunt, was unlucky to turn a searching cross into her own goal to give Guiseley a 4-0 lead.

With the game effectively over at half-time it would perhaps have been understandable if Guiseley had eased off. However aided by 3 second half substitutions Guiseley maintained high standards and extremely high work rate and were rewarded with 5 more goals from Tanya Rich (3), captain Michelle Walsh and a further own goal.

After such a long break from playing Guiseley inevitably tired a little in the last 15 minutes and Sheffield United were rewarded for their persistence with a consolation goal from a late penalty.

This was an extremely impressive performance from Guiseley with all players contributing well, however special mention must be made of Becky Kendell (see photo) whose movement and technique throughout the game created a host of chances for other players

Tanya Rich’s 4 goals in this game confirmed her as the league’s leading goalscorer with 16 goals in 11 appearances.

Team: D Maslin, L Hunt (C Blythe), K Zserdicky, K Welham, L Whitton, E Maguire, M Walsh (C Hulme), M Sherwood (E White), A Beresford, B Kendell, T Rich. Unused substitute N Bates.
