Three up for purring Lions

The Lions clinched their third straight win with a fairly straightforward win against former reserve team manager Vince Brockie’s new team Thackley at Dennyfield.

First half goals from Joe O’Neill, Danny Boshell and Gavin Rothery put Guiseley in the driving seat going into the break. Although they couldn’t add to their tally in the second period it was still a telling performance ahead of Saturday’s final warm up game against Gateshead at Nethermoor.

Ellington went close with a glancing header from Guiseley’s first attack but it was strike partner O’Neill who grabbed his chance after just five minute shooting under the diving keeper.

Nine minutes later Ellington made his way down the left channel to deliver an inviting ball for Boshell to finish off at the far post. Shortly after, a free kick was headed straight to Rothery on 24 minutes and the ball was nestling in the corner of the net before anyone else could react. Boshell also brought a fine one handed save from the home keeper before Steve Drench saved at the feet of Matt Mathews.

The usual flurry of second half substitutes inevitably disrupted the flow of the game and the visitors were unable to add to their tally mainly due to several good blocks by the Thackley keeper – the choice save being a superb reflex reaction to Danny Ellis’s wicked swerving shot that the keeper saw late but still managed to palm away.

Thackley did reduce the deficit on 72 minutes, a Giles parry allowing the Thackley man to convert the loose ball. The Dennyboys also rattled the crossbar in the closing minutes.

Despite a close shave this was a comfortable victory for the Nethermoor men against a side who are three divisions  and two leagues below them.

The Lions entertain Gateshead at Nethermoor on Saturday, 3pm kick off.
