Guiseley opened their pre-season programme at Nostell Miners’ Welfare, where they had suffered a 1-0 reverse in the equivalent fixture last season, and notched up an emphatic 8-0 win, having gone in at the break 6-0 up.
With strikers James Walshaw and Josh Wilson attending weddings, Chris Mason and Nicky Boshell weighed in with a hat-trick apiece as the Lions cruised to an easy win against a team who play in the Northern Counties East Premier Division.
Despite creating several half chances, it took the Lions eighteen minutes to score their opener when a well-worked free kick by Danny Boshell and Gavin Rothery was converted by Danny Ellis at the far post via a couple of rebounds.
Rothery then fed Mason down the centre channel, and the striker held off two defenders to shoot wide of the home ‘keeper for the second. When Andy McWilliams delivered an inviting cross from the right Nicky Boshell scored with a superb half-volley, and when the latter was tripped in the area as he looked to convert his brother’s judicious through ball Rothery stepped up to convert the spot kick with an audacious chip for the fourth.
The fifth arrived when a telling cross from Jamie Clarke out on the right was converted by Nicky Boshell, who took advantage of a static home defence. The younger Boshell then converted his brother’s cross on the stroke of half-time to put the Lions six up.
Manager Steve Kittrick made wholesale changes on the restart. Danny Cunningham saw his fierce shot parried before Mason scored the seventh, and then Mason dinked a delightful ball over the ‘keeper when, following a melee on the 18-yard line, Mark Bower poked the ball through for him to apply the finishing touch. The former Bala Town striker nearly grabbed a fourth, hitting the post after Zack Dale had brought a good save from the ‘keeper.
