Two goals in the last ten minutes clinched a vital three points in Cheltenham’s quest to return to the Football League at their first attempt.
In a tepid first half, Cameron Burgess took the sting out of James Hurst’s shot, while Dan Holman’s piledriver was tipped over by Steven Drench and the visitors also had an effort cleared off the line just before the break.
The second half proved a much more competitive affair, but the Lions’ lack of a cutting edge once again proved crucial as a free kick from the right was headed home by the unmarked Rob Dickie on 80 minutes. Town hit the bar shortly afterwards – followed by an almighty goalmouth scramble – before Dan Holman ensured the three points on 89 minutes with an easy conversion after the home defence had failed to cut out a low cross from the byline.
And although Harry Pell was dismissed late on for a second yellow card, the Robins held out.
The one saving grace for the Lions was that all the other teams involved in the relegation scrap also lost, with the exception of bottom side Kidderminster, who triumphed 2-1 at fellow-strugglers Welling, although it still leaves the Harriers eleven points from safety with four games left to play.
Next up for the Lions is the visit of Wrexham this coming Tuesday (7.45 pm) in what is the penultimate home game of the club’s inaugural season in the National League.
