Lions Suffer Fourth Defeat On The Bounce as Boston Gifted Last Gasp Winner

Following Tuesday’s capitulation against Brackley Guiseley delivered a much more assured performance  in a scrappy encounter against Boston United at Nethermoor this afternoon. But and just as it seemed as if they would come away with a share of the spoils a defensive lapse at the death gifted Scott Pollock the winner and send the visitors back to Lincolnshire with all three points. Read how the Lions missed out on an opportunity to get points on the board in our match report sponsored by BuildADrive.com.

Having been given a vote of confidence by the clubs Directors earlier in the week the management restored Andy Hollins to the centre of the defence and partnered Kaine Felix and Josh Stones up front with new signing, ex Altrincham, Salford, Chester and Kidsgrove Athletic midfielder John Johnston,  making his Guiseley debut.

The first half was a scrappy affair as both sides struggled to string more than three passes together with the only action of note being a shot cleared off the visitors Boston goal line, by Brad Nicholson inevitably, and Danny Elliott missing an absolute sitter courtesy of a defensive mix up which brought Owen Mason out of his goal only for the Pilgrims midfielder to hit the upright with the goal at his mercy.

The second period was a marked improvement on the first as the visitors created four openings, one of which brought a superb full length save from Owen Mason, without converting their chances.

Guiseley’s best spell of the game came after Andy Kellett and James Gale had replaced Josh Stones and Scott McLean just after the hour.

First Gale went close as his header bounced of the top of the bar and then Hollins shot from an acute angle finished up in the side netting.

This was followed by Felix firing just wide of the upright and Gale doing the same as he got on the end of a fine move by the home side, prompted by Kellett, but couldn’t find the all important finish.

And then just as it looked as though the Lions had secured a precious point captain Hamza Bencherif headed the ball down to Pollock who with only Mason to beat made no mistake to condemn the home side to their fourth defeat on the bounce.

With the teams around them either losing or drawing the Lions still have fourteen games remaining and one or two games in hand on their relegation rivals and a win against fellow strugglers Blyth Spartans on Tuesday evening at Nethermoor is a must.
