Lions purring

Guiseley maintained Saturday’s good form into tonight’s game at the Butchers Arms to come away with a well deserved 3-0 win with goals from Gavin Rothery, James Walshaw and Joe O’Niell.

Rothery was first to threaten the home sides goal and keeper Paul Philips did well to push his low shot round the post before Ciaran Kilheeney replied with a powerful shot that Steven Drench fisted away.

Following a series of forays the first goal arrived on 23 minutes courtesy of Walshaw evading a sliding tackle to deliver a ball across the six yard box for Rothery to apply the simplest of finishing touches. Eight minutes later it was two nil with a ball through the back four which Walshaw latched on to before listing over the diving Philips.

Droylsden responded through Kilheeney once again, but this time his powerful header from a corner was cleared off the line by Dave Merris. The same player then got down the channel but with only Drench to beat put his shot wide of the post.

Luke Sharry pulled up midway through the second period clutching his thigh and was replaced by Darryn Stamp. The lively Rothery who seemed to be relishing his central midfield role the caught substitute Dan Gardner in possession but Phillips did well to block his shot.

With the clock ticking down the Lions were awarded a free kick as Walshaw was fouled just outside the area and when the wall failed to block the resulting shot it was left to the hard working O’Niell to apply the deftest of touches and steer the ball wide of Philips   for the third on 89 minutes and seal the victory that moves Guiseley two places up the table to fifth with five games left to play.
