Lions make hard work of it

Crisis club Histon came into this game having parted ways with their manager on Wednesday due to the on-going financial problems at the Glassworld Stadium. But if the home side thought the game would be a foregone conclusion, they were sadly mistaken. The visitors dominated for much of the second half but were unable to make the crucial breakthrough thanks largely to home custodian Steve Drench, who made important stops from Jay Dowie, Lewis Taaffe and James Stevenson among others.

They did eventually get some reward for their efforts against a lethargic Guiseley, Taaffe scoring the goal of the game with eight minutes remaining. The striker turned a home defender before rifling an unstoppable shot into the top corner to give Histon hope of salvaging something from the day. But it proved too late as the home side played out the remaining minutes to secure the three points.

Nick Freeman had tested Drench early on with two speculative shots on target and Taaffe had the ‘keeper diving at the foot of the post to keep out his low shot. The Lions took the lead on eight minutes courtesy of some intricate play between Kevin Holsgrove and Josh Wilson. It saw the ball cannon off Danny Fitzsimmons into the path of Gavin Rothery, who made no mistake from eight yards out.

The goal that eventually sealed the win came from a Guiseley counter-attack in the 64th minute after Jamie Clarke had cleared a Histon corner from under his own bar. The ball eventually found Wilson, who bore down on goal before shooting past the outstretched hand of Calum Kitscha.
