Guiseley were punished for their lack of cutting edge as FC Halifax Town booked a home tie with League Two side Wycombe Wanderers in the FA Cup First Round courtesy of a 2-1 win in extra time.
Following Saturday’s draw at The Shay it was the visitors who took a first-half lead only to be pegged back in the second half. The Lions hit the woodwork twice in added time and went close on a couple of occasions but eventually exited the competition courtesy of a heavily deflected shot that wrongfooted Steven Drench with six minutes left on the clock.
Sam Walker opened the scoring for the visitors when he completed a sweeping move to net on the half hour. The only other effort worth of note before half-time was Shaun Tuton’s header that was instinctively blocked by Drench.
Things improved after the break with Tom Craddock going close after getting on the end of Ryan Toulson’s cross and substitute Luke Porritt was denied by Matt Glennon’s outstretched foot.
However, it was Saturday’s two goal hero Adam Boyes who squared matters on 75 minutes with a clinical finish as the ball pinged around the area from a Guiseley corner. Glennon once again kept his side in the tie to deny Boyes a second shortly after while at the other end Drench managed to keep the Shaymen at bay.
Former Halifax skipper Danny Lowe’s cross hit the bar and then Adam Lockwood’s powerful effort also came back off the woodwork.
Craddock and Jake Lawlor both had efforts just the wrong side of the post on the restart but with the two sides tiring and penalties looking a foregone conclusion, James Bolton’s effort beat Drench from thirty yards out courtesy of a huge deflection off Lockwood.
