Lions Get The Blues

Guiseley were narrowly defeated at play-off chasing Warrington Rylands, writes David Bridson.

Harrison Wood’s eighth minute dash past the Lions defence and subsequent calm finish was enough to seperate the sides.

The Lions created plenty but were not clinical enough in front of goal.

Though John Lufudu made several early trademark runs the winger failed to trouble home goalkeeper Luke Pilling prior to the opener.

Will Longbottom’s 15th minute free-kick following a foul on the dangerous Lufudu was fired straight at Pilling.

Lufudu carved a way past the Blues backline in the 29th miniute but the grateful Pilling captured his strike via a deflection from Matthew Regan.

Two minutes later a second Longbottom free-kick flew inches over the Rylands bar.

Lufudu caused more chaos moments later but his shot slipped over.

A crisp 36th minute passing move relieved the pressure on Warrington but goalscorer Wood fired over at its conclusion.

Two minutes later Rylands substitute Jake Burton could only find Cracknell from the edge of the box.

With four first-half minutes to spare the dynamic Harrison Hopper’s attempt via Longbottom’s cross went over.

The unmarked Jordan Thewlis’ header soared agonisingly off-target on the brink of half-time.

The Lions began the second-half well, forcing Rylands back as they pressed for a leveller.

Regan scrambled to head a clever Lufudu flick away from underneath the crossbar in the 52nd minute.

Burton curled an effort wide six minutes later as the game became an end-to-end battle.

Ben Hardcastle rounded Cracknell in the 66th minute but his shot trickled wide from an acute angle.

Two minutes later Will Longbottom found himself one-on-one with Pilling but his strike fell straight into the grateful goalkeeper’s hands.

Substitute Bobby Moore chanced his luck from distance in the 71st minute but his shot was off-target.

Thewlis volleyed wide three minutes later as Guiseley pushed the resolute home defence.

The threatening Wood rattled the side netting on 77 minutes.

A double change nearly paid off for the Lions as Joao Silva and Archie Christie-Crainie linked up well.

The latter was unlucky to see his strike blocked on the line with ten minutes to spare.

Two Rylands defenders appeared to halt a Thewlis cross with their arms in added time but the referee waved away penalty appeals.

The result sees Guiseley remain in 13th place in the Pitching In Northern Premier League Premier Division.

The Lions are next in league action at Nethermoor on Saturday 24th January with a 3pm kick-off.
