Phil Jevons’ late penalty denied the Guiseley a double over Stockport County on Saturday, although the Lions’ unbeaten run was extended thanks to the 3-3 draw at Edgeley Park.
Guiseley manager Mark Bower made two changes to the starting eleven for the second game of the double-header against Stockport as Oli Johnson and Adam Boyes replaced Kevin Holsgrove and Alex Johnson.
A quiet opening saw Kristian Dennis shoot harmlessly wide before Danny Ellis’ free kick was headed on by Jake Lawlor for Boyes to shoot over at the other end.
Good interplay finished with Dennis curling a shot just wide for County but when a ball out to the left found Wayne Brooksby the winger cut inside and his shot low into the far corner on 39 minutes gave Ormson no chance.
The Lions’ joy was short-lived however as County were level less than two minutes later; Jevons took a ball down and shot past Steve Drench from ten yards to send the sides in all square at the break.
Brooksby was cautioned early in the second period as the game hotted up and Holsgrove replaced Oli Johnson on 55 minutes
After Drench had done well to turn another Jevons effort round the post, from the resulting clearance the ball was worked downfield and eventually found Boyes in a one-on-one with Ormsby and the striker showed great composure to lob the stranded keeper from the edge of the area and restore the Lions’ lead.
Brooksby was denied by a good stop by Ormsby and Gavin Rothery also brought a good save from the shot stopper who did well to tip over the midfielder’s effort from twenty yards out. But from the resulting corner the ball was played to the far post where Danny Ellis was on hand to double the visitors’ advantage on 70 minutes.
Not to be denied however the home side hit back through Jevons who hit home a clinical half volley with fifteen minutes remaining.
Danny Forrest came on to replace Brooksby and Holsgrove looped one just over the bar as Guiseley went for the kill but when substitute Robert Johnson brought a superb reaction save from Drench it was County who were in the ascendancy.
County threw everything at the Lions in the four added minutes and they were awarded a free kick on the edge of the area in the dying stages.
When the ball was played over the wall the referee pointed straight to the spot – presumably having spotted a handball in the wall – and Jevons stepped up to convert the spot kick, completing his hat trick in the process and salvaging a point for the home side.
