Late lapse nearly costs Lions

After a largely forgettable first half where Albion Sports had the slight edge Steve Smith this West Riding County Cup Tie finally sparked into life midway through the second half when Guiseley corner was cleared to Erico De-Sousa who hit a sweet volley past Jack Bentley from eighteen yards to open the scoring.

Shortly after Jordan Preston went close when his low shot came back off the foot of the post and straight into Bentley’s arms but the Lions then doubled their advantage as Tom Lynam delivered a delightful lob over a crowded penalty area and into the far corner.

Michal Rankine put a header just over the angle and before the visitors were allowed back into the game and pulled one back through Temour Khan who converted Omar Habeebs cross from close in.

Albion then squared matters with virtually the last kick of the game when Dan Atkinson could only parry a long range shot and Khan pounced to slot home his second.

Much to the relief of the 163 hardy souls who had braved a freezing cold evening the game went straight to penalties and Atkinson atoned for his earlier mistake by saving the last of Albion’s five spot kicks to give Guiseley a 5-4 win and put them into the last sixteen of the competition where they will face Selby Town at Nethermoor in early December.
