Gateshead just shaded this final pre-season friendly courtesy of Jon Shaw’s assured finish midway through the second period. This after a first half of few chances with Joe O’Neill going close twice for the Lions whilst Nathan Fisher missed a sitter from six yards out for the visitors.
From the restart Tim Deasy did well to foil O’Neill but the decisive moment came when a ball was played in behind defender Simon Ainge which Shaw ran on to and fired wide of Steve Drench. Yemi Odobade should have doubled the margin late on but Drench’s terrific point blank save foiled him.
