Drench delighted with change of fortune

Goalkeeper Steven Drench has been delighted at the Lions’ change of fortune in recent weeks, a theme that continued on Saturday with the FA Trophy win over Histon.

Aside from the West Riding County Cup victory over Ossett Albion, the 3-0 win at Nethermoor was Mark Bower’s first clean sheet in charge, with Drench explaining that Guiseley are now getting the rub of the green – something that wasn’t always the case in Bower’s first few games.

“It’s been a good turnaround,” he told Tom Feaheny.

“The first few games that Mark was in charge we played well but didn’t get the results and any mistake we made we were punished. But that has now changed and long may it continue.

“Wins breed confidence and I now feel we are getting a bit of luck as well so I am pleased with how things are going at the moment.”

Looking ahead to Saturday’s Skrill North tie with Oxford City, Drench believes his team-mates will need to be on their guard against a side who are 18th in the table.

“I think Oxford are in a false position because they brought in some really good players from Brackley and when we played them last season they gave us two tough games,” he said.

At the other end of the pitch, Alex Johnson scored in his third consecutive home game since joining from FC Halifax Town.

‘AJ’ believes the threat in Bower’s forward line is causing problems for opposition defences, highlighted by his second-half goal on Saturday.

“I saw Gavin get it on the edge of the box and I just peeled away from the defender, then I’ve just taken a gamble and nicked my boot on to it and it’s gone in,” he explained to Francis Grainger.

“The four of us (including Danny Forrest, Gavin Rothery and Wayne Brooksby), we can all play in different positions and swap over so we’re doing really well.

“That’s our fifth game unbeaten now so we really need to keep this momentum going and then, next Saturday against Oxford, we’ll hopefully get another three points.”
