Donaldson Delight In Dour Defeat

The Lions’ six game unbeaten run came to a halt at Prescot Cables’ Valerie Park ground with a goal in each half from the hosts, writes Adam Bridson.

Tony Donaldson struck before the break from a narrow angle after rounding Joe Cracknell to separate the sides at the break.

An hour in to the contest Will Longbottom headed into his own goal to effectively wrap up the points for Prescot and seal a game of few chances.

The game, played on a sunny wintry afternoon, never seemed to get going but it was the hosts who took their chances and kept resolute at the back to keep out the Lions. It was the first time under Ian Richards’ stewardship the Lions didn’t get on scoresheet.

The match was 10 minutes old when John Murphy headed over from a cross for the first chance of the afternoon.

10 minutes later and the Lions nearly forced Calvin Hare into a save, Amir Berchil delivered a teasing ball into the box which just evaded the heads of Ollie Brown and Jordan Thewlis in middle.

The ball was adjudged to have touched a home player and the referee gave a corner, the Lions then won another corner which Harrison Hopper crossed in for Lebrun Mbeka who could only head over from close range.

Prescot Cables countered quickly and Cracknell dashed off his line to close the angle down on Donaldson but the number 10 rounded the stopper before slotting calmly into the bottom corner from a narrow angle.

With 10 minutes of the half left Prescot had two good chances to double their lead. They both fell to Alex McNally who was free at the back post from a corner, the full back saw both his efforts cleared off the line by Lucas Odunston and Mbeka.

Similar to the first half it took nine minutes for the first chance in the second 45. Berchil chopped in from the right hand side but his shot went straight into the hands of Hare.

With 30 minutes left Prescot got their second goal from a corner, Longbottom headed past a helpless Cracknell who could only watch the ball fly into the net.

The contest petered out from here with the hosts happy to sit on their commanding lead but it was Cables who had the best chance.

With 10 minutes left a home attacker saw his effort cleared from underneath his own crossbar by Mbeka.

The final opening went to the Lions, George Goodman made a surging run forward but his drilled shot went straight at Hare.

The Lions move on to their final away game of 2025 with a trip to Hebburn Town on Saturday 20th December.
