Injury-ravaged Guiseley turned in an impressive performance to win this battle of the promotion contenders in a classic game of two halves in a game that was punctuated by an enforced thirty-minute stoppage.

Early in the second half, Trinity substitute Leon Mettam sustained a neck injury that caused sufficient concern for him to remain on the pitch until the medics deemed it was safe to move him to the waiting ambulance.
Gainsborough started strongly without really worrying home ‘keeper Steve Drench as the Lions took time to get attuned to the pace of the game, but once they did it proved decisive when Andy Holdsworth’s corner found the head of central defender Danny Ellis, who squeezed the ball in at the far post despite the efforts of Michael Emery on 14 minutes.
Guiseley lost influential midfielder Danny Boshell shortly afterwards but doubled their lead ten minutes later as Chris Senior stepped over James Walshaw’s low cross to allow substitute Dean Lisles to sting the hands of Emery only to see the loose ball cannon in off Simon Baldry’s legs
After Trinity had replaced the injured Shane Clarke with Mettam, Matthew Wilson made a timely interception to deny Paul O’Connor whilst the home side saw Walshaw limp off to be replaced by Lee Ellington. Ryan Kendall then missed a glorious opportunity to reduce the arrears just before the break when he took down a cross but blazed his shot high over the angle from eight yards out.
Eleven minutes into the second period Mettam sustained his injury and and when the game resumed it was Trinity who looked the livelier of the two sides but they lacked the composed finish that might have got them back into the game. There were strong appeals from the visitors that the ball had crossed the line during a goalmouth melee, but Drench emerged with the ball clutched to his chest. He also denied former Lion Darryn Stamp with an effective block and collect late on.
Not that Gainsborough had it all their own way as Jamie Clarke got on the end of Wilson’s free kick only to shoot straight at Emery while Senior – who by now had been joined by his third partner of the afternoon Joe O’Neill – put his shot the wrong side of the upright despite the attentions of three defenders.
Lions’ boss Steve Kittrick credited his players with a solid defensive performance following the enforced interruption. “Matthew Wilson came in and did a good job as did Dean Lisles, who has only trained with us so far but his ability to harass and close opponents down just fits the bill.”
