Denton treble downs Lions

Tom Denton’s hat trick saw North Ferriby United grab their first win since the historic FA Trophy triumph over Wrexham at Wembley in what was the Lions’ last home league game of the campaign.

Having secured a play-off spot on Saturday courtesy of Saturday’s victory over Chorley Guiseley manager Mark Bower chose to rest Gavin Rothery, with Danny Ellis, Nicky Boshell, Jack Stockdill and Liam Dickinson in the starting line up to gain some valuable game time.

Guiseley opened the scoring after just three minutes when Adam Boyes carried on where he left off on Saturday, skipping past defender Mark Gray and goalkeeper Jonathan Hedge to slot the ball into the empty net.

Ryan Kendall tested Steven Drench shortly after but the Lions should have been two up when Nicky Boshell was left one-on-one with Hedge but his attempted lob went harmlessly wide.

Boyes was then just a whisker away from converting Wayne Brooksby’s cross but when Drench parried a shot at the other end Denton was on hand to square matters on 35 minutes.

Stockdill then played a great ball over the Ferriby rearguard for Boyes who looked to be tripped just as he was about to pull the trigger, although the referee ignored appeals for a penalty.

Jason St Just was next to try his luck, lobbing the stranded Drench but Andy Holdsworth was on hand to put the ball safely behind.

All square at the break, Oli Johnson replaced Jake Lawlor at the start of an eventful second period that kicked off with the visitors being awarded a penalty which saw Drench maintain his consistency as he saved Liam Kings spot kick.

Johnson then showed some delightful skills as he drifted across the eighteen yard line and crossed for Boyes to apply the finishing touch to restore the Lions lead on 52 minutes.

The lead lasted barely quarter of an hour as Denton bundled the ball home at the near post with the home defenders claiming that he had handled the ball in the process.

Alex Johnson and Ryan Toulson replaced Boyes and Holdsworth on 62 minutes but Guiseley then lost Ellis to injury shortly after and with all three subs on, had to play the last twenty minutes with ten men.

Inevitably Ferriby took the initiative and wrapped it up on 75 minutes when Denton converted Curtis Bateson’s cross from close in.

And despite a late flurry the home side were unable to force an equaliser and so remain fifth ahead of the trip to Oxford City.
