Burns: Lions unlucky in defeat

Lions midfielder Michael Burns believes his side were unlucky in their 2-0 defeat to Bradford Park Avenue on Tuesday night.

Burns, who made his first competitive appearance of the season for the club last night, having recently been re-signed by Mark Bower, was impressive throughout and was applauded off by the Nethermoor faithful.

He felt that the scoreline did not tell the whole story and believes there are signs of improvement for Bower’s men.

He told Tom Feaheny: “Anyone who wasn’t at the game will look at the 2-0 scoreline and think we were beaten easily but that was not the case.

“We have played well and we played Park Avenue off the park at times but the referee has done us no favours tonight. We will move on and try again against Hednesford on Saturday.”

In a second-half which saw plenty of promise from the Lions, Burns was instrumental in much that was created and the former Vauxhall Motors man was surprised his team-mates could not get on the scoresheet.

“I thought we were certain to score on a few occasions, I mean when I sent the cross into Jake, I really thought that was going into the back of the net, but it wasn’t our day,” he continued.

“I think Mark (Bower), wants us to play football instead of going long-ball and we played Park Avenue off the pitch so it worked. I hope we can do the same on Saturday.”

Burns is now in is third spell with the club having initially been brought back in the summer.

The left-footed midfielder revealed his decision to leave the club earlier this season was only due to a lack of match action under former Lions boss Steve Kittrick.

“I left the club because, after six games, I hadn’t even been named on the bench,” he explained.

“As soon as Mark and Chris (Holland) rang, there was always a good chance I was going to come back to the club.”
