Lions respond to Bower’s demands

Match sponsored by Guiseley remain top of the pile after defeating Worcester City by the narrowest of margins with Danny Forrest’s header proving to be the difference between the two teams on Saturday in a game sponsored by Allen Engineering.

In doing so, they also kept a third clean sheet and met the target set by manager Mark Bower of three victories from the trio of opening games.

The game started at a lively pace with the unmarked Daniel Nti spurning a golden chance to put City ahead early on when he put his header wide from eight yards out.

The home side created a couple of half chances and finally got the reward for some slick passing as a corner was played back out to Wayne Brooksby who whipped the ball back in for Forrest to head wide of Nathan Vaughan on 28 minutes.

Shortly after, Adam Boyes went close to doubling the lead but put his header from Alex McQuade’s cross just the wrong side of the post.

Forrest could have wrapped it up just after the restart when he got on the end of Danny Boshell’s cross at the far post but shot straight at Vaughan.

Having survived this, the Dragons mounted a concerted effort to square matters but it was Guiseley who went closest when Brooksby’s free kick round the wall was tipped on to the post by Vaughan.

The Lions did however suffer a setback at the death when Gavin Rothery was dismissed for a second yellow card.
