25/26 Match Preview: Whitby Town

Guiseley host Whitby Town in a mid-table clash at Nethermoor this weekend, Scott Kelly.

Match sponsored by: Chris Wright

“Second half I thought we had more possession than them. They were just more clinical in the two penalty boxes. That has cost us”.

‘We didn’t convert any of our meaningful chances’ was Ian Richards honest assessment of the Lions 2-0 defeat at Hednesford Town last weekend.

“This time next season I want us to be in their (Hednesford’s) position. We are not far off. Guiseley is a huge club at step three. Anyone who signs for Guiseley under us will have to understand that they are signing to win promotion”.

‘It is a litmus test’ said Richards when questioned on where he eventually wants to get to with Guiseley. ‘I know where we need to improve’ he continued, with it looking most likely like a mid-table finish this time around.

“Our home form since we have come in has been really good. We want to continue that until the end of the season”.

Whitby away was Richards’ first game in charge of the Lions. They conceded late on to only draw in that one, but he remains confident they can get the home victory this weekend.

Team News

York loanee Mo Fadera has come in following the end of loans for Archie Christie-Crainie and Lewis Gould. He will be hoping to make his first start after an appearance from the bench at Hednesford. Calum Hudson and Joao Silva will also be pushing for starts.

Jack Emmett came off late on on Saturday due to a ‘niggle’ according to Richards and is expected to be fit to face Whitby.

Will Longbottom and Jamie Spencer will be missing, with George Goodman moving closer to full fitness.

The Opposition

Whitby have had a huge overhaul of late. Gary Liddle ended his playing career and his association with the club just last month. Liddle was approached by Hartlepool United to work alongside current manager Nicky Featherstone as they continue to chase down at top seven finish in the National League. Lee Bullock was his replacement, who has been co-managing alongside Jason Kennedy and will continue to do so until the end of the season at least. Bullock spent much of his playing career in the North East, and was at the Seasiders from 2020-2022 alongside former manager Nathan Haslam. He left Redcar Athletic to return to Whitby. The Steelmen currently sit top of the NPL East and are 17 points clear of nearest title challengers Matlock Town and Emley AFC, with promotion to the Northern Premier League all but secured.

Whitby sit five points above the drop zone, with Bullock overseeing just one victory from his first seven games in the dugout. The others were three draws and three defeats with the Seasiders currently 15th and on track to outdo their 16th placed finish last season. They have lost consecutive league matches at home against Lancaster City, and most recently on Tuesday night, against Ashton United. Only Rushall and Stocksbridge have a worst home record than the North Yorkshire side this campaign.

Matty Tymon was the sides top goalscorer with nine league goals but has just signed for Workington. Former Lion Jake Charles has seven. Charles played for the club on loan back in 2015 before earning a move to Barnsley in 2016. First choice goalkeeper is Shane Bland. Sam Collins, Adam Gell and Frankie Whelan play in defence, with Aaron Haswell, Jarrett Rivers and captain Lewis Hawkins operate in midfield.

Previous Meetings

The sides drew 1-1 in Whitby back in November, with Jordan Thewlis’ penalty cancelled out late on by The Seasiders’ Aaron Haswell.

The Lions had won all three of the meetings prior to that. Whitby did win 3-1 at Nethermoor back in August 2023, this being their only victory over Guiseley in their last 11 meetings.
