25/26 On The Road: Prescot Cables

After late success last weekend, the Lions are hoping to go six games unbeaten and secure a fourth straight victory. They travel to Merseyside to take on Prescot Cables, where they have not had great success of late, writes Scott Kelly.

“In the first half the performance was exceptional. We had the quality on the bench and on the pitch and we got a well-deserved three points”

Albeit eventually, the Lions grabbed a late 1-0 victory over Leek Town. Boss Ian Richards was delighted with the overall performance and the impact of the substitutes.

“They are well organised side. It will be a tough game. We will have a game plan to play to our strengths and try to nullify theirs”

Previewing Prescot, Richards alluded to the victory picked up earlier in the season whilst with Stocksbridge but is confident the Lions can end their recent hoodoo there.

Team News

The key bit of news out of the club has been the end of Leo Farrell’s loan spell with the club at the end of last week. Farrell actually came off the bench for Barnsley in their Emirates FA Cup tie with Peterborough last weekend.

Jake Lawlor is likely around 7-10 days away from full fitness according to the manager, with Liam Ridehalgh and Jamie Spencer also missing this weekend.

Sam Bentley is likely to return from injury and could feature this weekend, as will Ollie Brown who will return from suspension.

The Opposition

Prescot’s form could not be more different from that of the Lions, with no victory in their last six matches. A 2-0 victory at Rushall Olympic on November 1st was their last victory, with their FA Trophy success over the Lions coming just the week prior.

Goal difference keeps them out of the relegation zone, with Rushall in 19th having played two games less.

Centre-back Peter Clarke has served many EFL clubs with distinction, and at 43 he recently passed 1000 senior appearances. can be found in the Cables back line alongside club captain Liam Hollett. Calvin Hare can be found between the sticks. Ex- Leek midfielder Tom Scully and Jack Goodwin can be found in the midfield, with Ben Elliott and Finlay Cross-Adair, who joined the club permanently over the summer from Fleetwood Town.

Elliott is the clubs top goalscorer with nine goals in the league. Only Gary Martin of Hebburn Town has scored more goals in the Northern Premier League than Elliott this season.

Their manager is Steven Daley, who has been in charge of the club since February 2023. There was some controversy however as Daley resigned shortly after their promotion to the Northern Premier League in 2024 following a summer of turmoil at the club. He was re-instated four days later.

Previous Meetings

The sides met in October in the FA Trophy, with Prescot coming from behind to beat the Lions 2-1 on Merseyside.

This Saturday’s meeting is only the third clash between the sides at Prescot since 2009, with the other meeting being a 2-0 defeat last season.

The previous two meetings at Nethermoor have been won by the Lions, with a 3-1 victory back in September and a 2-0 success last November.
