25/26 Match Preview: Morpeth Town

It is back to home comforts for Guiseley as they host Morpeth Town this weekend off the back of consecutive away defeats, writes Scott Kelly.

“They were well on top. Again, we conceded goals that were gifts. The second goal, which kills the game, is a difficult one to take”.

Mark Bower accepted that the better side won on Tuesday night, with Stockton Town defeating the Lions 2-0.

Team News

Harrison Hopper will miss Saturday’s game. He also missed Tuesday’s game, with Bower saying he will miss the next couple of weeks. Tom Senior could be set to deputise for Hopper.

Jamie Spencer will be hoping to keep his place after playing the full 90 minutes on Tuesday.

Lucas Odunston is still not 100%, with Liam Ridehalgh and Jake Wright still missing.

The Opposition

Morpeth finished last season strongly. They were unbeaten in their final seven matches of the season, culminating in an impressive 8th place finish for the Northumberland side.

They have struggled to replicate that form though, as only one win from their first eight games this season sees them begin their clash on Saturday in the bottom three. What might worry the Lions though is the impressive draw they picked up on Tuesday night at high-flying FC United. However, they have worryingly only scored four goals in the league this season.

Their FA Cup run is something their fans can smile about. Successive 2-1 victories over Pontefract and Witton Albion means they face a tricky home tie against National League North side Southport in the third qualifying round, and potentially two wins from the first-round proper, a stage of the competition the Highwaymen have never reached before.

Their squad includes goalkeeper Dan Langley, captain Jeff Henderson, Dan Myers, as well as forwards Luke James and Aaron Chungh. JJ Hooper has recently joined the club after spending last season at Blyth Spartans.

The man at the Highwaymen helm is Craig Lynch and has been in charge of the club permanently since October 2021.

Previous Meetings

The Highwaymen got the better of the Lions when they last met back in January. That 2-0 victory is their only three points collected against Guiseley.

A 3-3 draw took place at Nethermoor almost a year to the day, with Jordan Thewlis snatching a point.
