22/23 Pre-Season Preview: York City

The Lions welcome York City to Nethermoor on Wednesday in a 7:30pm kick-off for our fourth home friendly on the spin.

This friendly was originally due to be played on Tuesday 19th July but following the Met Office issuing a red weather warning for extreme heat it has been pushed back to Wednesday 20th July. See our full update here.

Segregation will be in place with York fans allocated the JM Glendinning seated stand and uncovered Railway End of the ground with entry via turnstiles 5-8.

Tickets can be purchased online in advance for home fans here and away fans here, tickets will also be on sale on the night at the turnstiles with payment by cash only, it is also cash payments only inside the ground for programmes and 50/50 cash draw tickets. Food and drink from The Lions’ Diner and clubhouse food servery can be paid for by cash or card and the clubhouse accepts and prefers payment by card.

Tickets for all of our home friendlies are priced at £10 Adults, £5 Concessions (Over 65’s), Under 18’s & Students and £1 Under 11’s with 2022/23 GAFC Season Ticket Holders getting half price entry on production of their season ticket at turnstiles 3 and 4.

Previous Meetings

York City came out on top in both meetings between the two sides last season with two divisions separating The Lions and The Minstermen following their promotion to the Vanarama National League through the play offs.

Former Lion Kingsley James is a First Team Coach at The LNER Community Stadium having worked with John Askey since November last year.


Important Season Ticket Information

Season tickets can be collected from turnstiles 3 or 4; half price entry for season ticket holders is only through turnstiles 3 and 4. This will be applicable for all pre-season friendlies.

A Look At York City

The Minstermen start the campaign back in non league’s top tier for the first time since the 2016/17 season.

They have retained the services of several of last season’s stars with additions brought in to bolster the squad for a new challenge.

City have played two friendlies so far with both ending in defeat to EFL opposition.

Middlesbrough edged out their hosts with a 3-2 win on 8th July and Bradford City made the trip to North Yorkshire and came home with a 4-1 win on Saturday.


A Look At The Lions

The Lions have also lost their last two friendlies after recording a 3-1 against Bury to start preparations for the new season.

Barnsley X1 came back from 1-0 down to win 2-1 last week and Premier League 2 side Everton U23s showed their clash with a 3-1 victory in the heat on Saturday.

Danny Ellis made back to back Lions appearances as he builds up his fitness for his player manager role at Nethermoor.
