16/17 Season Review: September

September saw the first points of the season arrive as Adam Lockwood was announced as permanent first team manager assisted by the heavily experienced Dave Penney.

A dour 0-0 draw at home to Braintree would not usually be memorable but it was the match that bought the opening point leaving the Lions still rooted to bottom place in the Vanarama National League.

Next up was the visit of Woking, Adam Boyes’ great strike opened the scoring just after half-time. The wait for the first win was extended though when Dennon Lewis’ finish eight minutes from time saw the visitors return home with a point.

A midweek trip to Chester followed and two second half goals from the hosts saw our poor away form continue. Kane Richards and Tom Shaw goals were enough for The Seals, Will Hatfield was also sent off for two yellow cards.

The first away point of the season arrived at Maidstone, the hosts rallied in the first half and took the lead through an Alex Flisher strike. Oli Johnson, Javan Vidal and Michael Rankine were withdrawn in the first half through injury and the number 11’s replacement Reece Webb-Foster scored his first goal for the club to earn a point on the road.

The last match in the month was the first under Lockwood and Penney’s permanent tenure as Macclesfield travelled to Nethermoor. The Silkmen raced into a two goal lead within 25 minutes with strikes from Chris Holdroyd and former Lion Oli Norburn. Jordan Preston did pull one back before half-time but we were denied a point when Reece Webb-Foster was adjudged to be offside as he headed in a cross.
