Excellent Away Point for the Ladies!

Peterlee Ladies FC 4 – 4 Guiseley AFC Ladies

Guiseley AFC made the long trip to Peterlee for the first league of the season to take on a side which narrowly missed promotion by 1 point last season.

The game started at a good tempo and it was clear from the early stages that the 2 teams were very evenly matched. Chances were at a premium with neither goalkeeper unduly troubled until a free kick into the Guiseley penalty area took an uneven bounce and struck Guiseley full back Sarah Lowden on the arm. The ensuing penalty was successfully taken by Peterlee’s Becky Robinson to give Peterlee the lead.

Guiseley responded well and an excellent through ball from Captain Michelle Walsh found Charlotte Proud in space and she scored with a clinical finish into the top corner to level the scores.

Neither team was able to achieve any dominance until a crazy 10 minute spell just before halftime saw Peterlee take a 3-1 interval lead with a cross-shot from Peterlee’s Lucy Garrington deflecting into the goal off the unfortunate Sarah Lowden and then Garrington doubled her individual tally after bursting through the centre of the Guiseley defence.

Although Guiseley were facing a 3-1 deficit at half-time the game had been very even and there was a strong belief that the game could be turned around. In the first 5 minutes of the second half another penetrating pass from Michelle Walsh found Julie Richardson in space and she finished well from an acute angle to reduce the deficit to 3-2.

To their credit Peterlee refused to allow Guiseley to dominate and a clever run from Lucy Garrington across the front of Guiseley centre half Lou Hunt led to another penalty which was again converted by Becky Robinson to restore Peterlee’s 2 goal advantage.

Guiseley refused to accept defeat and started to take control of the game, being rewarded when centre forward Amy Parker scored with an unstoppable shot from just outside the penalty area.

Guiseley continued to push forward and were rewarded when Captain Michelle Walsh crowned an excellent debut with a 30 yard strike which again gave the Peterlee goalkeeper no chance and levelled the scores.

With 15 minutes left the only team looking like winning the game were Guiseley and they were unfortunate when the goalkeeper made an excellent save from a Kerrie Zserdicky free kick and then substitute Bethan Smith was just unable to score from a very narrow angle after finding space behind the Peterlee defence.

Overall a draw was probably a fair result but the desire, commitment and skill demonstrated by Guiseley in the second half meant that this result felt like a point gained rather than 2 points lost.

Team: Boswell, Lowden, Zserdicky, Hunt, Welham, Bates (Davies), Walsh, Richardson, Newton, Parker, Proud (Smith). Unused substitutes : Topliss, Jones
