Young Lions Start 2020 With A Win

The Young Lions secured three points and the double over Solihull Moors when they stepped out for their first game of the New Year at Nethermoor yesterday.

Having not played since 13th December the break had given Nick Brayshaw time to recover from his injury and return to the side, this time in the right-back position.

Guiseley however were still without the injured Adam Haw, Harry Rayner, Josh Calvert, Asa Stevenson-Lowe and Darwin King.

Undaunted they made the early running and a ball from Raf Marques put Charlie Heath in on goal but the ‘keeper slid in to put the ball out for a corner.

The Young Lions opened the scoring on ten minutes when Robbie Fox scored at the near post after a good move.

Guiseley had the ball in the net for a second time but the referee made the call to bring the hosts back to the half-way line for a free-kick.

Ferreira was inches away from a curling cross as it travelled across the goal to safety. Fox produced another run and shot forcing the ‘keeper into a good save as half-time approached.

Solihull took advantage of some sloppy defending early in the second-half to level the scores but Guiseley battled to regain the upper hand with Ferreira firing at the ‘keeper. The impressive striker eventually got his reward when he made a good run and fired home to make it 2-1 to Guiseley.

The Moors ‘keeper tipped a Ferreira shot over the bar and was then almost caught out when Oli Brown cleverly chipped him but the ball landed on top of the goal.

Nathan Newall then twisted and turned his way into a good position in the penalty area but could not get his shot away.

Solihull’s players were dropping like flies with cramp and minor injuries but Dave Currie’s side just appeared to get stronger and Charlie Heath thundered in a shot that rebounded off the post as the game came to an end securing Guiseley a further three points to retain second place in the table behind AFC Fylde.

Guiseley: Hagie Damba; Nick Brayshaw, Harry Wilkinson, Kaydan Henry, Nathan Newall; Robbie Fox, Oli Brown, Charlie Heath, Haroon Bastan; Raf Ferreira, Lewis Hey. subs: Joe Webster, Carlos Nunes.
