Young Lions End 2024 In Defeat

Guiseley Academy never recovered from a three goal blast in ten minutes from visitors South Shields early in their game on Monday, writes Rachel O’Connor.

Lacking big players in captain and centre-back Freddie Westfall and leading scorer George Sebine Guiseley never really recovered from this onslaught, although they had the better of the second-half.

In a game played at Trinity University, Horsforth, the lads from the North East took a 17th minute lead after Zac Rushworth had provided the Shields ‘keeper with an easy take. Guiseley had tried to play the offside game but it didn’t work on this occasion.

Shields had a further chance before making it 2-0 in the 26th minute when a good ball in found the left-back who fired in past Spencer Booth in the Guiseley goal.

The scorer then turned provider as Shields extended their lead to 3-0 in the 27th minute.

Guiseley had a number of chances to claw back the deficit but lacked the finishing touch.

Derren Boyle got away but shot straight at the ‘keeper and then they had the ball in the net only for off-side to be called.

The Young Lions did manage to reduce the deficit before half-time when Boyle finished a well-worked move on 45 minutes.

Guiseley battled to get back into the game after the break but their profligacy in front of goal cost them dearly.

They wasted a free-kick from the edge of the penalty area before Zac Rushworth produced an excellent run to the byline followed by an excellent cross in but there were no takers.

Dan Fotherby’s effort hit the post in the 61st minute and this was to be the pattern for Guiseley hereafter.

Further chances came but Guiseley were unable to put them away.

Any hopes of getting something out of the game ended when Shields netted a fourth goal against the run of play in the 66th minute.

Guiseley threw all their substutes on in a bid to turn the tide but to no avail.
