Young Lions Draw With Gateshead

Missed chances and individual errors cost Guiseley Academy the full three points when they entertained Gateshead at the Frickley Sports Hub on Wednesday, writes Rachel O’Connor.

The National League U-19 Alliance North game game ended in a 3-3 draw giving Guiseley four points from their opening four league games.

This slow start to the league echoes that of last season, a season in which they went on to become league champions.

Their league form has not yet matched their cup form in a week when they are gearing up for their next challenge in the FA Youth Cup in which they visit Macclesfield next Friday, October 18th.

The Young Lions have progressed to the 3rd Qualifying Round with big wins over Dronfield (3-0), Yorkshire Amateur (7-0) and Brighouse Town (7-1) before beating York City (2-1) in a game watched by almost 300 people.

Two changes were made to the line-up for the encounter with Gateshead with Spencer Booth replacing Harry Churnin-Ritchie in goal and Mason Donaldson replacing leading scorer George Sebine up front.

Emre Can made his second substitute appearance of the season, replacing Donaldson in the 60th minute and banging in two goals.

The other goal came from Lucas Alexander, his seventh of the campaign.

After the game Academy Head Coach Dave Currie said: “It was disappointing to lose as we had our chances but the players as always gave it everything. Their overall performance was very good.”

Guiseley: Spencer Booth; Lawrence Ford, Freddie Westfall (C), Joe Taylor, Robbie Murray; Jack Lorriman, Marley Spence, Max Dickinson, Zac Rushworth; Lucas Alexander, Mason Donaldson. Subs: Emre Can (Donaldson 60), Oli Storr (Lorriman 70), Mackenzie Aylward (Rushworth 70), Ollie Jacques.
