Vixens travel to Blackpool Wren Rovers

The Vixens have their final away match of the season when they travel to Blackpool Wren Rovers this Sunday.

Guiseley are needing just the one point to win the league title and gain promotion to the FA Women’s Premier League for next season.

The home side are yet to win a league game in the year of 2017 and will be hoping to put the brakes on Guiseley’s title win for another week.

Oliver Coultas recently caught up with joint manager Glen Preston to gain his thoughts on the upcoming fixture.

You’re left needing just the one point to win the league, how confident are you that it will come in this game?

Preston said: We are confident but we’re taking nothing for granted. Blackpool still need points on the board and so they won’t want to be handing us the title on their turf. We’ve got to be as committed and as professional as we were against Chester-Le-Street for the last two weeks and if we do that I’m confident we can wrap things up this Sunday.

Blackpool Wren Rovers haven’t won a league game this calendar year and youre on red-hot form but on the other hand they have the league’s top scorer in Nikki Berko. How do you see it playing out?

Their home form is actually pretty good, although they havent been at home for a long time, so again we will have to be vigilant. I expect it will be  a close affair as I don’t see either side giving a lot away and with Nikki they have a match winner on their hands. That is why they have drawn with Feds and taken Chorley and Hull to the wire on their pad so it’s not going to be easy!

“I feel we are ready for this challenge, it’s been one of the best weeks of training and we can see the players are focused and that they want to get their hands on the trophy this weekend, so there will be no let up from us.

Debs Hastings scored a good goal last weekend, how important was that for her confidence?

“Debs was voted the player of the match as well versus Chester-Le-Street by the opposition along with scoring a great goal which I hope will do wonders for her confidence. She is a top lass so she deserves it. I’ve been lucky enough to work with her at Huddersfield Town as well as Guiseley and if she hits top form she will be unstoppable at this level.

“She offers us something unique in the way she plays and she can get in behind defences almost at will, so hopefully she takes last week’s performance into Sunday’s game and helps us get some silverware.”

Sarah Danby and Liv Thackray are hot on the heels of the league’s top scorer, do you think they can catch her?

Again just like Debs, I think we are starting to see the best of these two now. Danby versuChester-Le-Street was everywhere and was at the heart of most of our attacks and Thacks is just pure magic. They put you one nil up before you’ve even kicked a ball at times and although they both trail Berko by three to four goals, they are definitely capable of catching her up.

“It will be a good challenge for them and with centre midfielders like Chantelle O’Hara and Lauren Griffiths behind you, these players will get chances.

He finished by saying: The final message from us to Guiseley AFC as a club is to help get behind the ladies in any way, shape or form this weekend. It would be nice to get some travelling support down to Blackpool to cheer us on but for those that cant, any support via social media and in the up and coming home games would be most welcome. It could make the difference in ensuring we put this great club’s female side well and truly on footballs map!

The game will be played at Bruce Park, School Road, BlackpoolFY4 5EL, and kick-off is 2PM.  Follow along on twitter: www.twitter.com/guiseleyvixens
