Vixens: Derby Snatch Late Draw

An injury-time goal for Derby snatched two points away from the Vixens after a heroic performance.

Goals from Fiona Worts and Debs Hastings were not enough to seal all three points for the traveling side as an Andi Bell brace drew the home side level.

There was also a first-team debut for midfielder, Ellie Olds.

It was a bright start from the Vixens, taking the game to Derby and creating plenty of chances in the first half hour, none going in unfortunately.

The home-side took the lead on the half-hour mark, pinching the ball from the Vixens defence before Bell slotted home past Beth Seasman.

There was almost an instant reply from Guiseley. Charlotte Gill played a ball through to Worts who caused trouble all afternoon. Her shot was saved well by Sarah Morgan. The Vixens then had a chance cleared off the line two minutes later.

Early in the second half, Worts got her goal which had been coming all game. Lauren Griffiths slid a ball through to the forward who struck early and into the back of the net. Game on.

Hastings came on the pitch in the 74th minute and made an instant impact, netting just three minutes later.  She pounced on a loose pass before darting into the Derby box, rounding the ‘keeper and putting home.

Guiseley were controlling the game at this point, creating more chances which could have been put home on another day.

Ten minutes from time, Seasman landed awkwardly badly injuring her knee after gathering a cross but battled on until full-time.

In the fourth minute of added time, Derby managed to pull level. Bell netting hers and Derbys second of the afternoon which was enough for the two sides to share the points. The Vixens should rightly feel hard done by after a dominating performance.

After the game, vice-captain Lauren Griffith said:

“I think we played well and had success when we pressed them high up the field. We worked hard as a team and as a collective, we prevented them from playing football.”

“We had a lot of joy playing through-balls past their back line and dominated possession for the majority of the game.  In some ways, it feels like a loss but there are plenty of positives to take and its a step in the right direction!
