Vixens close in on title win

Guiseley Vixens add to their impressive points tally with a 1-0 home win over Chester-le-Street.

The result leaves Guiseley needing just four points from five games to win the FA Premier League Northern Division One.

The only goal of the game came on the stroke of half-time when Danica Roberts held the ball up before threading it through to Liv Thackray who slotted it past the ‘keeper to send the Vixens in 1-0 up.

The second-half was fairly quiet up until the latter stages when goalkeeper Steph Barraclough produced two fantastic stops in the final ten minutes to keep her clean sheet and maintain the win.

Joint Manager Kyle O’Reilly said: “It was a fantastic result and tough like we knew it would be. Chester-le-Street were still in the title race as such going into today so it was a massive three points for us.

1e2″There were a lot of new faces in, a lot of players missing and it’s job done for us so we move on and are confident.”

Joint Manager Glen Preston said:”I think we have shown the quality of the depth of our squad. For us to have a number of first team players absent and still keep a clean sheet and win is really pleasing.”

The Vixens now switch their attention to the West Riding FA County Women’s Cup when they face Bradford City on Wednesday in the semi-final at Fleet Lane, Woodlesford.

Looking forward to this game O’Reilly said: “We’re confident and when we’ve played teams from the league above we’ve gone in as underdogs but we’ve played ridiculously well against them. We go in knowing we can compete with teams from the higher levels of women’s football.

“We are looking forward to it and they are a local rival so it should make for a decent spectacle.”
