Guiseley slumped to a 3-2 defeat in an intense and bad tempered affair at Nethermoor against league leaders Hyde United writes Edward Robertson.
Manager Paul Phillips was unimpressed with his side’s performance. “For me we didn’t stick to what we worked on. I thought we were lethargic, I thought we were one-dimensional, I thought we didn’t stick to what we’ve been working on in the last 5-6 weeks. But the game was tough, it was very ebb and flow.”
The Lions got off to a promising start after the 15th minute. Jake Cassidy placed the ball well to the feet of Lewis Whitham whose shot rolled just wide.
The pressure prevailed on the 20th minute when Kallan Murphy was bundled to the floor in the Hyde box, earning Guiseley a penalty. In form winger Whitham stepped up to take the spot kick, but good reactions from Dan Atherton denied him. However, Callum Chippendale smartly poked home the rebound from close range.
The lead was short lived though, as the visitors equalised just ten minutes later. Striker Will Russ lost his marker, skilfully turned to face goal, and fired home, much to the dismay of the home crowd.
The Lions came close to restoring the lead when Jake Cassidy capitalised on a loose ball in the Hyde box, only to see his shot strike the woodwork.
The game took a turn for the worse for the Lions after Barnsley loanee Kareem Hassan-Smith fouled Jack Redshaw in the penalty box. Following a long delay Redshaw duly converted the second spot kick of the match, while Hassan-Smith received a red card on his debut.
The Lions started the second half strongly. Courtney Meppen-Walters’ powerful header from a corner was scrambled away, then Murphy’s shot rolled wide.
Hyde began to knock on Guiseley’s door for a third. Liam Tongue skilfully flicked the ball into the air, chested it down and hit a spectacular volley that shaved the crossbar.
Ten minutes later the Tigers made their pressure pay when Redshaw rolled the ball to Tongue on the edge of the box. This time the Hyde midfielder made no mistake in striking the ball sweetly into the bottom corner of the net.
Ten man Guiseley frantically searched for a way back into the game. They got their reward on the 86th minute when Adam Haw drilled home from outside the box. A a deflection from the defending side helping the ball past the helpless goalkeeper.
It wasn’t enough though the Lions and it the first home defeat for Phillips who, despite a brave performance from his charges, was eager for improvement.
“I think the manner of defeat was frustrating. The goals we conceded were preventable, and we wouldn’t have conceded them if we had done what we’d been working on in the past couple of weeks.”
