The Lions’ pre-season friendlies started with defeat to League 2 side Bradford City with different 11’s in each half and plenty of trialists on show.

Leeds United’s first pre-season friendly is on Wednesday night at York City just 24 hours before travelling to Nethermoor, the squad will then fly out to Australia for the next stage of their preparations.

Following Saturday’s defeat Tom Feaheny spoke to Russ O’Neill who said: “First and foremost the goals were poor that we conceded and in the first half we didn’t test their keeper enough, it is about fitness and everyone has got 45 minutes, we finished with 10 men for the last 25 minutes after the tackle on Scott Smith.”

“We know there is areas we have got to improve on, we are not going to sit on our laurels, bring on next week.”

Eight trialists were named on the team sheet on Saturday and Russ is looking to know more on where these players are at on Saturday “Some of the trialists have done really well and put a real claim in, after Thursday and Saturday will we make the cut and give them a good opportunity and chance to stake their claim.”

Looking ahead to the remaining friendlies O’Neill said “We have a real tough set of friendlies and that is what we wanted, we will get tested even more next week, it is really good for us and we are looking forward to it.”

Speaking about new strikers Aaron Martin and Gabriel Johnson the Joint Manager said “Both Aaron and Gabriel did well I thought, they have integrated into the group really well, you can see they have that connection between them and hopefully we can keep improving that and see the benefits from it.”

Finally Russ O’Neill is ready for a packed out Nethermoor on Thursday night “Leeds are a massive club, I didn’t really realise until I came to Guiseley just how big they are, even at their U23 games here last season there were thousands here, it will be a massive occasion and another stern test for us, I cannot wait.”
