Senior seals it at the death

Substitute Chris Senior’s last-gasp decider helped the Lions maintain the pressure on leaders Hyde after the home side had overturned a two-goal first-half deficit.  Having pulled themselves level within seven minutes of the restart through Simon Ainge and James Walshaw, Guiseley’s pressure eventually paid off when Senior grabbed a deserved winner.

Walshaw and Ciaran Toner flashed shots over the Alty bar, but James Lawrie and Michael Twiss tested Steve Drench before Nicky Clee latched on to a clearing header from a corner to hit  a superb half-volley into the top corner on thirteen minutes.

Guiseley lost Danny Forrest to injury with Lee Ellington coming on, and minutes later Ellington’s cross evaded everyone. Next, Walshaw controversially had a goal chalked off by the linesperson’s flag, although he appeared to have come from behind Matt Flynn to fire past Stuart Coburn.

Guiseley then forced three consecutive corners from which Danny Ellis had a shot blocked on the line and Toner an effort deflected wide but they were rocked back on their heels when Altrincham’s leading scorer, former Lions’ loanee Damian Reeves, netted from close range on the stroke of half time to send the visitors in two goals to the good.

Maintaining their recent record of second-half comebacks, the home side restored parity within seven minutes of the restart. First, skipper Simon Ainge’s header from a corner found its way through a posse of defenders on the line, then Walshaw levelled matters when he made progress down the left past Kieran Walmsley to fire  in a cross-cum-shot that looped up over Coburn after Matthew Flynn had got his head on it in attempting to clear.

Walmsley then nearly put through his own goal, whilst at the other end the visitors had a goal disallowed for offside. Following sustained pressure, Walshaw nearly put his side in front with an acrobatic overhead kick only to see Coburn make a superb reaction save to deny him.

The keeper then frustrated Toner by palming away his shot from the edge of the area with Senior just unable to reach the loose ball. However, the diminutive striker was soon on hand to shoot past Coburn after Andy Holdsworth had played a ball forward that Walshaw brought down and rolled into his path.
