Following a lacklustre first-half performance, Guiseley delivered a dominant second-half display to overturn a one-goal deficit and run out convincing winners in the end to notch up their fifth consecutive victory.
Having had the better of the possession in the first half, Gloucester looked good value for their slender lead at half-time, courtesy of Darren Mullings’ drifting in from the right on 26 minutes before lifting the ball over Steve Drench for a well-taken opener. Earlier the home side had seen several efforts blocked, with Wayne Brooksby going close when he forced Conor Thompson into a good stop.
With City in front, and Guiseley seemingly posing little threat, the game turned on events immediately after the restart. First, City’s Lewis Hogg was dismissed, having received a second yellow card for scything down Brooksby, who was then instrumental in the Lions’ equaliser. His astute cross-field ball found Josh Wilson, whose ball back was converted by Nicky Boshell.
Four minutes later, Wilson himself was played in on the right to drive a vicious shot into the far corner beyond Thompson and put the home side into the lead. Matt Coupe’s header across the home six-yard box found no takers and Nicky Boshell then put the result beyond doubt, beating the offside trap to shoot wide of Thompson and maintain the Lions’ 100% start to the season.
