Gavin Rothery continued his return to full fitness on Monday, featuring in the Academy’s under-21 side as they beat Pickering Town 5-2.
Fellow first-teamers Dan Atkinson and Luke Porritt were also involved as Dave Currie’s side kicked off their West Riding County FA Under-21 League campaign with a win.
Rothery has not featured for the Lions since the 4-0 defeat at home to Aldershot, but the midfielder opened the scoring on Monday in front of a watching Mark Bower before a Devonte Morton hat-trick and a late goal from substitute Tafadzwa Mumbanya sealed victory.
Currie said afterwards: “Gav played 65 minutes and looked sharp. For the younger lads to play alongside someone of his quality is brilliant.
“It speaks volumes for his desire and professionalism that he was willing to drive over and play – he was also constantly giving the young lads advice and encouragement so they will gain a lot from that.
“Hopefully, Gav will benefit from the match fitness as well.”
