Leigh joined the club on 20th December 2022 and made his debut from the start the evening against FC Halifax Town in the Isuzu FA Trophy.

Whelan was born in Wexford, Ireland and crossed the water together to join Chesterfield’s Academy in 2020.

Central midfielder Whelan progressed through three levels of football in Ireland playing for Cabinteely FC and moving to Dublin to play for Shelbourne in the League of Ireland.

Leigh has also played for Sheffield FC and Stocksbridge Park Steels.

On 4th August 2023 it was confirmed that Leigh had signed a new deal with the club for the 2023/24 season.

On 12th June 2024 it was announced that Whelan left the club to sign for Marine, Leigh made 40 appearances hitting one goal in the 2023/24 season.
