Striker Jake Day joined The Lions on 9th June 2021 after being recommended to The Lions’ Management Team by Curtis Woodhouse.
The 6ft 3 ins heavyweight boxer was a late starter in football only entering the men’s pyramid of football at the age of 24 having intrigued his boxing mentor Curtis Woodhouse with the number of goals he was scoring.
Woodhouse, another who has combined the two sports of football and boxing, was impressed with Day’s exploits at lower levels and recommended him to Scarborough Athletic.
He had a dual registration with Bridlington Town and then signed permanently for them netting 85 goals in 107 games.
He spent two and a half years at Bridlington before Woodhouse signed him for Tadcaster Albion where he made 20 appearances in the first Covid-19 affected season. He then played for Alfreton in the 2020-21 season, another cut short by Covid.
Of his signing Day said: “It is a big step from Step 5 to Step 2 in just four years and I have no history of junior football or being attached to Academies but once I started playing open age football in Sunday leagues and then Saturday’s I have always seemed to score a lot of goals.”
This is backed up by the fact that Bridlington-based groundworker Day netted 68 goals in one season in the Driffield and District League in just 22 games and 50 goals in 24 games in the East Riding County League before moving up the Pyramid after nine goals in four games in the Humber Premier League.
On signing for The Lions Day said “I used to play in a pub league and score for fun but I enjoy it a lot more playing with much better players around me. I am now looking to press on with Guiseley and I am looking forward to playing in front of a crowd, that has been missing over the past two seasons.”
Day said that he currently feels the fittest he has ever felt as he prepares to test himself at his highest level yet. He said: “With my boxing training along with some running and my physical work as a groundworker I feel at peak fitness. I have had 22 fights as a heavyweight and have won 19 of them, 12 on knockouts. Boxing is my other passion and it is great for my fitness.”
The striker is involved with coaching boxing to children at Curtis Woodhouse’s gym in Driffield.
A strong player Day is expected to provide a real presence up front for The Lions.
After making three appearances fo The Lions it was announced on 28th September 2021 that Jake had signed for Scarborough Athletic for an undisclosed fee.
