Narrow Defeat For Lions As Harrogate Snap Up Chances

Guiseley began their pre season in encouraging fashion with a narrow home defeat to National League side Harrogate Town, writes Edward Robertson.

The contest was a remarkably even affair from the first minute. The Lions tested the visitors with early chances courtesy of the retained Jordan Thewlis.

As half time approached, Harrogate broke the deadlock. A defensive mishap released Bailey Hobson, whose powerful effort tore into the bottom corner.

The visitors fielded an entirely new eleven in the second half, and Guiseley too, made a number of changes.

The Lions nearly levelled it in the early stages after half time. Jordan Thewlis nabbed the ball from Rory Watson, but his effort was cleared off the line by Warren Burrell.

Guiseley were left to rue their chances as the visitors doubled their lead with twenty minutes left. Neat interplay between Grant Horton and Lucas Barnes released Mason Bennett. The striker confidently fired into the top corner.

Five minutes later, Lucas Odunston picked out Amir Berchil on the edge of the area. The forward’s effort flew over the crossbar.

Moments later, the Lions scraped their way back into the game. A trialists’ ball into the path of Cam Wilson allowed for the tricky debutant to make a foray into the box, and slot the ball home past Watson.

Whilst it was a defeat for Guiseley at Nethermoor, there were some positive signs to build on against a Harrogate side looking to bounce back up into the football league in the coming season.

Guiseley continue their pre season on the road, as they travel to Northern Counties Eastern Premier Divison side Tadcaster Albion on Tuesday.
