Guiseley were beaten 2-1 by Lancaster City in a fiery Friday night encounter at Nethermoor, writes David Bridson.

Captain Lebrun Mbeka opened the scoring following a 40th minute goalmouth scramble.

City equalised through Steven Yawson in the 75th minute before Dylan Moonan got his side in lead in the 85th to claim all three points.

Guiseley began brightly as the lively Jordan Thewlis’ early run was halted by Dolly Blues stopper Brad Kelly.

Mbeka couldn’t quite direct his header on target via a trademark Adam Lund throw in the fourth minute.

The dangerous City captain Sam Bailey fizzed a fierce corner across goal five minutes later.

James Nolan’s 14th minute header looped over as the visitors looked to grip hold of this tight affair.

Cam Wilson’s 19th minute free-kick effort drifted over.

A Bailey cross slammed the post and fell into Lions goalkeeper Jack Hall’s thankful arms two minutes later.

Elliot Owen’s brave block prevented Jim Craig’s 28th minute delivery before Bailey’s strike was well caught by Hall.

A deflection off Owen took all the sting out of Craig’s fierce 37th minute shot.

But Mbeka gave the Lions the lead from close-range after the ball ping-ponged inside the box.

A stunning quick-fire triple save by Kelly in first-half added time prevented Aaron Martin, Thewlis and Wilson from adding to the lead.

The visitors soon pushed for an equaliser.

Nolan’s dipping thunderbolt was spectacularly tipped over by Hall in the 51st minute.

A potentially perilous Bailey cross was well caught by Hall moments later with namesake James lurking.

Wilson thought he was one-on-one with Kelly in the 56th minute but referee Samuel Ross felt the ire of Lions fans when he blew for a foul on a City defender.

The Lions created chances aplenty in a bid to fend off the threatening visitors.

Martin’s cracking strike was palmed away by the sturdy Kelly in the 62nd minute.

Thewlis thought he had doubled Guiseley’s lead from Kyle White’s pinpoint cross a minute later but the lively forward was called offside.

Adam Lund fired over from outside the box in the 64th minute.

Owen headed wide from a Lions corner three minutes later.

But City levelled after Yawson calmly rounded Hall and slotted home with fifteen minutes left.

With the game there for the taking Kelly reacted smartly to save Wilson’s 80th minute effort.

Substitute Ollie Brown’s neat cross narrowly evaded White moments later.

Moonan’s looping shot flew over Hall with just five minutes to spare.

Jack Emmett, who replaced Charlie Staniland in the 78th minute, saw his cross flash across the box in the 87th minute.

Lancaster defended resolutely to see out the game and seal all three points.

The defeat sees Guiseley slip to fifth in the table.

The Lions are next in league action away at Emley on Bank Holiday Monday with a 3pm kick-off.
