Defender Rhys Meynell was full of praise for team-mate Alex Johnson after his goal on Saturday sent the Lions through to the next round of the FA Trophy.
The strike continued Johnson’s fine scoring streak and also extended Guiseley’s impressive form to nine games unbeaten in all competitions, with Meynell delighted for both the team and Johnson in particular.
“We went there with no fear, with nothing to lose against a team in the league above. We knew we could get a win if we played well enough against a very strong Halifax side, so, we’ve done very well,” he told Micky Ruddle.
“We went there on the back of a few good wins and a couple of clean sheets and we knew we could do it if we applied our game early doors. We did that and reaped the rewards.
“AJ gives us a great platform up there on his own. The other strikers in the dressing room are unlucky not to be playing, but when he is playing that well, you can’t really take him out.
“He came back here (Halifax) with something to prove.”
The former Stalybridge Celtic defender also feels the current management team of Mark Bower and Danny Boshell deserve much of the credit for the turnaround on the pitch.
“Mark’s been brilliant since he came in. It’s been like a new lease of life for the lads,” he said.
“He’s brought Danny Boshell in who has a few things to say in the dressing room, but he also does his talking on the pitch.
“He settles us down and gets us playing. I think we will be alright for the rest of the season.”
We will face Bradford Park Avenue in the second round of the FA Trophy. The tie will take place at Nethermoor on Saturday, December 14th.
Due to our FA Trophy involvement, the trip to Solihull Moors will now take place on Tuesday, January 21st.
