For the second successive game the Lions played some good football and created enough chances to clinch that elusive win, but despite a brace from leading scorer James Walshaw they were twice hit on the break and conceded two preventable goals.
Playing some neat football Workington’s youthful looking side were first to threaten and the instinctive covering of Danny Ellis saw the defender kick the ball off the line after James Coates had missed an attempted punch clear.
After much pressure the home side finally made the breakthrough on 28 minutes as Walshaw raced down the channel and despite being forced wide by keeper Aaron Taylor he squeezed the ball home from an acute angle much to the delight of the home support.
The lead lasted until the last minute of the first half when indecision from Ryan Toulson gave the ball to Kyle May who fed Johnny Wright to draw Coates before setting up the easiest of chances for Gareth Arnison. Even then the Lions went close to restoring the advantage but Warren Peyton’s shot clattered of the angle of post and crossbar.
Five minutes in however the Lions were back in front courtesy of the hard working Joe O’Neill’s ball that bisected the two Workington central defenders and allow Walshaw in behind them, hold off his marker and slot the ball under Taylor.
And despite much pressure the home side were unable to add to their tally and suffered the consequences with seven minutes remaining when a substitutes Connor Tinnion and Phil McLuckie combined with some slick passing to create a second opportunity for Arnison to shoot past Coates for his second.
Like Peyton in the first half, Danny Forrest went close shooting just over the bar as the game neared its conclusion as the Cumbrian’s held out for a share of the points.
