Lions Sweep Past Steels

Guiseley got more vital minutes in the tank and picked up a positive home result, winning 2-0 against Stocksbridge Park Steels on a sunny Friday night at Nethermoor, writes Joe Priestley.

The Lions started brighter dominating the possession in the early stages with Aaron Martin and Jay Rollins looking deadly early on, Martin having the best of the early chances, flashing an early header wide of the near post.

Adam Lund dominated the midfield, winning every 50/50 and throwing himself into every challenge as the Lions ensured they controlled possession in the opening minutes. Jack Hall remained virtually unchallenged between the Guiseley sticks as Stocksbridge failed to provide a response.

As Guiseley continued to turn the screw, the first goal came through Martin, bagging his first Nethermoor goal in six years from close range and making his early intent pay off.

Guiseley continued to push with chances falling to Amir Berchill and Cam Wilson but Stocksbridge held firm to prevent the deficit from extending.

Late in the opening 45 minutes Charlie Staniland struck the bar with a shot from long range.

The second half brought a step up from the Lions and the resulting pressure brought about a penalty on 50 minutes, which Cam Wilson duly converted to continue his fine pre-season form.

Chances continued to flow as the Lions put a number of free kicks and corners into good areas, but they missed the final touch as Stocksbridge continued to hang on, with Steels only response being a cross from a free kick five minutes from time that was well dealt with.

The new LED floodlights kicked into life for the first time in the second half with the sun setting on a cooling Nethermoor.

Ultimately, it was a fine win for Guiseley and a good step on the pre-season plan. In his post match interview, Manager Ian Richards was quick to praise his side’s movement and decision making and their progress over pre-season in general, and whilst there may be a long way to go, few will disagree based on tonight’s performance.
