Lions Surrender Lead As Brackley Take The Points

Read our match report sponsored by BuildADrive.com to find out how Guiseley were the architects of their own downfall at Nethermoor this afternoon as Brackley Town came from a goal down to clinch all three points with a 3-1 win.

After a fairly even first half visitors Brackley started strongly in the second half but it was the Lions who took the lead with Lebrun Mbeka’s thunderbolt on 69 minutes but the lead lasted just four minutes as Shane Byrne levelled.

Ethan Coleman then turned the game on its head with a peach of a free kick visitors were not finished as Wes York scored a third to add some gloss to the final score.

There were few chances in the first 45 as both sides struggled to gain any meaningful momentum, the visitors coming close with Gaz Dean’s header elicited a great save from Brad Wade while at the other end Andy Kellett had the home sides best chance when an attempted defensive clearance was headed back into the mix by the returning Andrai Jones and Kellett beat the offside trap only to head straight into the arms of Danny Lewis.

The Guiseley midfielder then broke down the left flank and put in a telling cross that was met at the far post by Mbeka but his shot hit the side netting.

The pivotal moment of the half, and the game as it turned out, came two minutes before the break when Guiseley lost playmaker Kellett to injury and Gabriel Johnson came on to take his place.

On the resumption Brackley introduced substitute Matt Lowe and immediately went on the offensive and without the influence of Kellett in midfield the Lions struggled to find an outlet going forward and too often balls were sent forward for Wafula, Felix and Johnson to chase but the ball invariably fell to an opponent and Guiseley were back on the defensive once again.

Lowe had a shot beaten away by Wade early on but it was the home side who opened the scoring when Coleman’s attempted headed clearance feel nicely for Mbeka who struck a rasping volley that left Lewis grasping at thin air.

Breaking down a Guiseley attack Town went on a swift counter with Jimmy Armson’s pass finding Lee Ndlovu who spotted Byrne galloping down the middle who took the pass and kept his cool to beat Wade to level.

Coleman then hit a sweet free kick into the bottom corner from twenty yards out in the last minute of normal time before Wade got his angles all wrong from a dead ball kick and with the home defence seemingly unable to get a hand on York, he was left to net Brackley’s third.

The defeat drops Guiseley to second from bottom but with the games coming thick and fast the Lions have an early opportunity to atone for today’s defeat as they travel to cup giant killers Chorley, who sit just one place above them in twentieth.
