The Lions return to Nethermoor Park on Saturday for their first competitive match since March with Atherton Collieries the visitors in the Emirates FA Cup.
The Emirates FA Cup second round qualifying tie is to be played behind closed doors at Nethermoor due to COVID-19 restrictions and supporters SHOULD NOT travel to or attempt to spectate the fixture.
It will be the first competitive first team fixture in LS20 since a 3-0 win over Leamington on 7th March making it a 211 day wait for a home match.
Unfortunately due to the current restrictions in place supporters will not be able to attend the game but we’ll be announcing more information on how the game can be followed from home, we’ll also have full match commentary from Guiseley Radio and match updates on Twitter.
The Lions have added six new faces to the squad including Andy Kellett, Jonathan Wafula, Lebrun Mbeka, Mark Howarth, Hagie Damba and Matty Gillam with Brad Wade coming back on loan from Rochdale after a spell last season.
Pre-season has brought mixed results with wins over Thackley and Chesterfield, draws with Worksop and Mickleover as well as defeats to Nuneaton, FC Halifax Town and Stockport County.
Marcus Bignot and Russ O’Neill should have a full strength squad to pick from with Andy Kellett making his return from injury in the win at Chesterfield.
Atherton Collieries have played three league games so far in the Pitching In Premier Division with 2-0 defeats at home to Scarborough and away to Warrington sandwiched between a 2-1 win at Grantham Town.
The two sides have met once before, again in the Emirates FA Cup but at the third round qualifying stage all the way back in 1994. A 3-1 win for The Lions in front of 599 spectators at Nethermoor Park was one of the games in our famous cup run as we bowed out at Valley Parade at ‘home’ to Carlisle United.
The team on 8th October 1994 was Steve Dickinson, Peter Atkinson, Paul Bottomley, Steve Richards, Colin Hogarth, Vince Brockie, Wayne Hesletine, Paul Cawthorne, Bob Colville, Geoff Horsfield Billy Roberts. Subs: Lutel James(for Cawthorne) Matt Flanagan (for Hesletine) Phil Hughes (not used) Scorers: Bob Colville, Geoff Horsfield, Billy Roberts.
The Lions go into the game knowing there is £3375 at stake for the winners and a place in the fourth round qualifying with fixtures due to take place on w/c 11th October.
