Lions Slip To Defeat As Martin Sees Red

Guiseley made the long trip to Evesham this afternoon to face Gloucester and despite taking an early lead through Gabriel Johnson they never recovered from the dismissal of Aaron Martin just before the break and went down to a 3-1 defeat as Marlon Jackson grabbed a brace for City either side of a strike from Luke Russe.

The visitors were rewarded for some early pressure when Johnson rifled home from 25 yards out after just seven minutes but City squared matters on 37 minutes as Jackson headed home Zack Knowles’ cross at the far post.

The Lions suffered a major setback in what had been a fairly even game up to that point when leading scorer Martin was shown a straight red four minutes before the break for an alleged headbutt on Sam Avery during a melee that also saw two Gloucester players yellow carded.

Scorer Jackson was also perhaps fortunate to stay on the field when badly misjudging a challenge but was only shown a yellow and would go on to score the third that put the game beyond the visitors after Russe forced Marcus Dewhurst into an error.

Prior to this Kaine Felix had replaced Jamie Spencer on the restart as the Lions went for pace up front but Martin’s dismissal proved to be a pivotal moment and City were soon in the ascendancy when Zack Kotwica’s cross found Russe at the back post and he nodded home to give City the lead on 58 minutes to set them on the path to victory.
