Lions return to winning ways

Match sponsored by Coopers Bar & Brasserie

Second-half goals from Wayne Brooksby and Oli Johnson finally sealed a deserved victory for Guiseley against Lowestoft Town in this first competitive game between the sides.

In truth, the margin could have been even greater but for visiting goalkeeper Ashlee Jones, who denied Adam Boyes, Oli Johnson, Danny Boshell and Gavin Rothery in quick succession and as the home side ramped up the pressure Rickie Hayles produced a timely tackle to deny the lively Johnson.

But the key moment came after Ryan Toulson had fouled Shaun Bammant and from the resulting melee five players were cautioned, including Sam Gaughran for the visitors.

When the same player was caught in possession by Boyes midway through the second period he hauled down the striker and as the last defender received the mandatory red card.

From the resulting free kick, Wayne Brooksby’s effort took a heavy deflection off Ross Jarvis in the wall to wrongfoot Jones and give Guiseley the lead.

Two minutes later, Jones was again left helpless as Oli Johnson’s powerful effort from twenty-five yards flashed into the bottom corner to double the Lions’ advantage.

Sensing more goals, the home side sought to press home their numerical advantage and Boyes, Brooksby, Rothery, Oli Johnson and substitute Andy Holdsworth all went close.
